For a Borg/Klingon/Vulcan/Romulan/Federation molecular composite, Ms. Merry was remarkably understanding. âNo,â she told Milton. âYou donât need to do your paper over again.â
âI know you canât help it,â Milton told Ms. Merry. âItâs just that I donât want to be assimilated.â
âThen you should probably stop watching so much television,â said Ms. Merry.
At the next community meeting, Miltonâs grandfather got up during the open microphone period and read Miltonâs paper out loud. It was a big hit, and, afterwards, several people came up and said it was nice to have a scholar on the reserve. Milton was flattered at first, but after heâd had a few cookies and some time to think, he felt a little depressed.
âWhatâs wrong, grandson?â asked Miltonâs grandfather, as the two of them walked home under a spacious, starlit sky.
âI donât know,â said Milton. âDoing that paper on the Indian Act and discovering what happened to the Borg was fun, but what good does it do to know that Europeans were created by a freak accident in deep space?â
âProbably not much,â said his grandfather. âBut look on the bright side. Now that we know the truth, having Europeans around wonât seem nearly as bad as it once was.â
âYou think so?â
âSure,â said Miltonâs grandfather. âThey invented television.â
âThatâs true.â
âAnd those ice cream bars covered with dark chocolate are pretty good, too.â
âThey certainly are.â
Miltonâs grandfather stopped and looked into the sky just as another shooting star flashed through the night. âAnd donât forget the Borg.â
âThe Borg?â
âSure,â said Miltonâs grandfather. âEuropeans are no great shakes, but think how bad things would have been for Native people if the Borg had gotten here in one piece.â The old man paused for a moment and a frown began working its way across his face. âUnless, of course, weâre wrong.â
âWrong about what?â
Miltonâs grandfather wrinkled his forehead. âOf course. Thatâs what they want you to think.â
âWho?â
âThe Federation.â
âJean-Luc?â
Miltonâs grandfather sighed and sucked at his lips. âWhen has the Federation ever lost a fight? When have they ever lost anything?â
Milton thought about this for a moment. âNever.â
âSo, what if the deep-space accident never happened. â Miltonâs grandfather was chuckling now. âWhat if the Federation attacked the Borg and defeated them long before the Borg got to Earth.â
âYou think the Federation attacked the Borg?â
âWhy not. The Federation likes to fight as much as the Klingons.â
âYeah, but they never start the fights. The bad guys always start the fights.â
âAnd they like logic, same as the Vulcans,â said Miltonâs grandfather, âand they acquire things at almost the same rate as the Ferengis.â
âYeah,â said Milton. âThatâs true. But what about the Prime Directive? The Klingons and the Vulcans and the Ferengis and the Romulans donât have a Prime Directive.â
âLot of good it does,â said Miltonâs grandfather. âThe Prime Directive says youâre not supposed to interfere with another culture, but Jean-Luc Picard and Data and William Riker and Councillor Troy are always sticking their noses into other peopleâs business.â
âThey can get a little pushy,â Milton agreed. âEspecially Riker.â
ââTo boldly go where no one has gone before,ââ said Miltonâs grandfather.
